Tim Evans
Investigations Editor
Tim Evans is Investigations Editor at the Indianapolis Star. He joined the staff in 1997 and served in a number of roles as a reporter, covering race and diversity issues, social services, gaming, courts and the law, and children's issues. He worked as an investigative reporter from 2010 until being named to lead IndyStar’s award-winning investigation’s team in 2022.
An Illinois native who began his journalism career in 1977, Evans previously served as a reporter, photographer and editor at newspapers in Indiana and North Carolina. From 2015-2020, he also headed IndyStar Call for Action, a free consumer helpline that saved or recovered more than $1.5 million for Hoosiers.
Evans has won dozens of state and national awards for his writing and work on investigations from the Hoosier State Press Association, Society of Professional Journalists, Investigative Reporters and Editors, American Society of News Editors, Annie E. Casey Foundation, and University of Missouri. He was named Indiana Journalist of the year in 2009 and inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 2020. His work on IndyStar’s investigation uncovering sexual abuse in gymnastics and the crimes of former Dr. Larry Nassar was profiled in the Emmy-winning documentary, “Athlete A.” He also has appeared in documentaries about Jared Fogle and D.B. Cooper.
Evans and his wife, Jennifer, a hospital chaplain, live in Brownsburg. They have an adult son, Morgan Evans.
