A new Starbucks is opening downtown in 2024, just down the street from where a Starbucks store closed last October, citing safety concerns.

The new Starbucks, which will include outdoor patio space, will open next year. The shop will be located at 30 S. Meridian Street in what was once the L.S. Ayres Department Store. The renovation will also include updates to the building's amenities and common spaces, to be completed in 2024, according to a news release from Kite Realty Group Trust, which owns and operates the building.

“The addition of Starbucks accentuates the premium atmosphere we aim to provide, “ Tom McGowan, president and chief operating officer of Kite Realty Group, said. “The commitment to quality in every aspect of the Starbucks product and stores aligns perfectly with our vision for 30 South Meridian.“

Napolese Pizzeria formerly operated a restaurant in the 30 S. Meridian St. building where the Starbucks will be located, but closed in 2021 due to lack of business.

The Starbucks on Monument Circle, formerly a popular destination for downtown workers, closed last year after the company cited concerns about safety for employees. However, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told IndyStar last year that Starbucks never communicated any concerns about safety to police.

Starbucks did not immediately respond to IndyStar's request for comment about why the company chose the 30 S. Meridian St. location, which is about 0.2 of a mile from the former Monument Circle store.

The former Starbucks space on Monument Circle is being taken over by Indianapolis-based Command Coffee, which has not yet said when it will open its new store.
