'Good Bones' stars to close Bates Hendricks home goods store at end of 2023
Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen Laine, mother-daughter duo and stars of HGTV's Indianapolis home rehab show "Good Bones," are closing their Bates Hendricks store, Two Chicks District Co. at the end of the year after just over three years of operation, according to a Friday social media post.
In the post, Starsiak Hawk cited "numerous challenges" as a small business from the time the store opened during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in summer 2020.
"I wanted to create a gathering place in Bates Hendricks; a place for locals as well as visitors coming to our amazing city," Starsiak Hawk wrote. "I want to thank the local community as well as the incredibly dedicated fans of Good Bones for their support and for being part of this journey with me."

The store, located at 1531 S. East St., sold a variety of home goods and merch from Two Chicks and a Hammer, Starsiak Hawk and Laine's company. Products for sale honed in on Two Chicks' signature style, a "earthy-Bohemian-meets-modern-glam," according to a 2020 IndyStar article. The store also has a beer and wine bar.
It's not the only change in the air for Two Chicks and a Hammer. After eight seasons and seven years, "Good Bones" is ending. The show, which attracted over 21 million viewers in 2022, followed Starsiak Hawk, Laine and the rest of their team as they flipped homes on Indianapolis' south side, primarily in Bates Hendricks and Fountain Square.
The mother-daughter duo, who call themselves Two Chicks and a Hammer, have been subject to scrutiny over the years, including accusations that their flips were contributing to gentrification in Fountain Square and Bates Hendricks, which have seen skyrocketing real estate prices. Last spring, the show creators had to pay a $40,000 fine for allegedly violating a federal lead paint law.

Two Chicks District Co. will be having going out of business sales starting Oct. 26, and gift cards will be honored through the end of the year. On Facebook, Starsiak Hawk thanked patrons who traveled from near and far to visit the store.
"It has been our second home so saying goodbye, while gut wrenching, is the decision I have to make for my family," she wrote. "Please understand and please give grace. What seems to be is often not what is."
